the king of kings

Feature Animation

Back in 2019, the company wanted to see if it could use this new technology in its own feature animation project <The King of Kings>. This animation film is based on a work by Charles Dickens, and was a work of big scale of from Victorian London to Jerusalem in the time of Jesus.

While managing development of UE assets and testing real-time motion capture, I also managed developing custom virtual camera plugin. I designed user interface and by getting feedback from director of cinematography through many test shooting, developed functions throughout a year while working on many projects including <Hansan> and <Noryang>. We added features not provided by default plugin such as dolly track control, and the camera also can be controlled by multiple users through additional controllers-MIDI device and geared head wheels.

Using virtual camera, I helped the cinematographer shoot scenes and finalize the layout in the virtual world as if he were filming a real set, and the elements on the virtual set were rearranged simultaneously according to the director’s feedback.

All scenes of <The Life of Our Lord> were shot in this solution in the pre-production(pre-mocap) stage and had reshoot and additional shoot in the post-mocap stage. All the static posed characters used in this process were replaced with motion captured data after the mocap sessions. Through the combination of this enhanced virtual shooting solution and motion capture had been a great help in establishing real-time animation pipeline. During the production, the company could get grants from Epic MegaGrants for these works.

Also I am scheduled to present the production process of this project at Unreal Fest 2025 Seoul in August.
